Seriously. Now, I’m not saying I’m a huge comic book fan who can quote you all the different women who’ve been in the group (because I’ve never even known where to start as far as reading comics are concerned….if anyone’s got a good guide you should show it to me). But when you look at the promotional material for the Avengers, you see lots of men, and lots of Scarlett Johansson’s ass (even from her first appearance in the Iron Man 2 poster). I know people got mad about it, because her poses in the posters were A) stupid and B) sexist. It’s her very presence that bothers me though, or rather, how she seems like an afterthought. I’m pretty sure the producers at Marvel were like,
“Wellllllll I guess we have to have a girl Avenger, so why don’t we pick the sexiest one we can.”
And the other producer was like, “DONE.”
And then they called Johansson’s agent.
She doesn’t even put her hair up when she’s fighting! Do you know how stupid that is? You can’t see shit when your hair is down and you’re running around, doing important saving-the-world crap.
I found out yesterday that Joss Whedon wanted to include the Wasp in the upcoming Avengers movie….now that would have been awesome. Janet van Dyne was in the original Avengers comic from the first issue, and she’s got a kickass pixie hair cut that you can fight crime in. She’s apparently also the one who came up with the name Avengers for the team (thanks Wikipedia).
I know there are other cool women in the movie, but it would be nice to see a GIRL with actual SUPERPOWERS on the team too, especially one who had been there since the original issue. Oh well….maybe next time? *crosses fingers for a good sequel*
